Attention Tahoe Pine Works Customers That Own Pets

Greetings All;

As this Tahoe Pine Works news section kicks off in our product blog! We thought we would reach out to all our customers whom are pet owners (we know we have a lot of them) so just in case you have not seen or heard about this pet food recall! We thought we would place it in our blog so your pets remain safe from tainted food.

Our dogs at Tahoe Pine Works Kodiak (the new member) and Sierra resident sales rep. Are all safe from this! However we did have a bit of a scare as our puppy Kodiak (pictured below) was eating (notice the was) some of this recalled food. Turns out the recall is for only the wet food and not the dry of Menu Foods whom do dog and cat foods for such brands like Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba and many others (according to the 800 number listed) It did take us hours upon hours to try to reach people at this number! as well  the 800 number on the dog food bag that we feed our pets (Nutro Natural Choice).

Please visit the recalled website to make sure that your dog or cat is not eating any of this tainted food. You can visit the link at http://www.menufoods.com/recall/ or you can visit the following for Dog food recall or for Cat Food Recall. The number they have listed on this site is 1-866-895-2708 be warned that this number is busy all the time. The number on the back of our dog food (Nutro Natural Choice) is 1-800-833-5330 and that website is www.nutroproducts.com However we are not able to log into that website.

Our Resident Dogs

Captured_20061114_00001_2 This is Kodiak (whom is now at the ripe age of 5.5 months and much bigger) He is our black lab who likes to crab all our tools, invoices and anything else he can find and place them in locations that we can not find them! He spends most of the day making us laugh and waiting for the FedEx driver. Of course Kodiak is still not sure what to do when he sees a bear out in the woods.

Cc This happens to be Sierra. She is the queen of Tahoe Pine Works whom is half border collie. She spends her time rounding up Kodiak and trying to help keep him out of things. She is also trying to teach him what to do in the snow and what not to do in the snow. Of course Sierra always lets us know when our bear is around.

We hope that none of your cats or dogs are effected by this recall.

Have a great Tahoe Afternoon and check back for more Tahoe Pine Works News soon.

**Update To This Story**

  • Examine outdoor steps and walkways, straightening or repairing as necessary
  • Check the grout between bricks and flagstones, repairing if necessary
  • Check the gates, and lubricate latches and hinges

Do Not Forget About Spring Chores Around Your Cabin

Whether you live in your cabin year round or you close it up for the winter, we have hit the time for spring cleaning. ” Yes it is hard to get motivated to do this when you visit your cabin as you visit it for a vacation “ yes you have most likely just finished spring cleaning your house”, and would rather be out playing in the sun and enjoying  spring after a cold winter. None the less we have to do our cabins as well. So lets get busy with some quick tips on things you should do around your cabin when you open it up for spring.

Fire Place

I like to start out with the fire place first since this is the worst job on the list! I like to get it out of the way ASAP.

Vacuum or dust the hearth area to prevent dust and soot buildup. Do not sweep or vacuum until all the embers have been extinguished for at least 12 hours.

Inspect the firebox and flue (Never use an abrasive cleanser inside the fireplace. Many leave a flammable residue). Remove all ash from the firebox and old burnt logs; fill any cracks that are inside. Most hardware stores will sale a filler for a reasonable price. (When cleaning your fireplace, you can sprinkle some damp coffee grounds over the ashes to keep down the dust.

The Fire Screen

Most fire screens are black painted metal, but if your screen is brass-plate, clean it as you would other brass objects.

If you have purchased one of our fire place screens to clean these simply mix 1⁄2 cup vinegar and 1 gallon warm water. Add 1 teaspoon ammonia. Dip a cloth into the solution, and wipe down both sides of the screen. Rinse with a cloth dipped in clear, warm water.

Glass Enclosures

Glass enclosures for the fireplace are constructed of tempered glass. Clean the glass facing the fire after every other fire to remove the residue of soot.

For baked-on soot, scrape the glass very with a glass scraper to avoid scratching the surface.

To remove smoke stains, mix 1⁄2 cup vinegar with 1 gallon clear, warm water. Add 1 tablespoon clear ammonia. Either spray this solution on the glass or wipe it on with a cloth dipped in the solution. Rinse with clear, warm water, and dry with a clean cloth.

We are now done with the inside of the fire place! So lets move on to the outside. If you are like us! Then you have burned several fires over the season and it is now time to clean the chimney. I first like to inspect all the brick on the outside of the chimney before I get on the roof. If I find loose or cracks in any bricks I fill them with mortar. I also use the hose and spray the chimney brick down. We seal our chimney so I like to make sure the water is still beads up! If you do not seal your chimney then I recommend it as it is a great way to help protect your brick or rock work on the outside. Of course if your water is no longer beading on the chimney! Well it is time to break out the seal and start painting.

At this point you can either call in a professional chimney sweep or do it yourself. I prefer the calling of a chimney sweep as they do this type of work all day every day and they know what they are doing and things to look for. If your cabin is located in the
South Lake Tahoe

area you can click this link to see a few chimney cleaners in this area.

Now that the fireplace is clean it is time to dust and vacuum the entire cabin thoroughly. We use lemon oil on all log walls and we place a pan of water on the wood stove to put some moisture back into the dry air. Next we tackle the windows.

Okay, we are sure everyone knows how to clean a window but don’t forget the window runners, check for any leaking that may have occurred during the winter and clean all the window treatments. I like to use a mixture of warm water and vinegar and I use newspaper to clean (something about the ink really puts a great shine on the windows).

Now it is time to head on out and inspect all water pipes! Since you have your cabin water on and running, take a peek under neither to make sure you have no pipes that are leaking or have burst. Nothing is worse then having water damage to clean up! So this is a major must do. Keep in mind that in spring plumbers in the Tahoe area are very busy with broken pipes! So be sure to call right away if you notice something wrong. At times we have used Lake Tahoe Plumbing and Heating to do some repair work on the

South

Shore

, we have been pretty happy with the work done by them.

Since you are now outside looking at your pipes! It is a great time to now start in the yard. The US Forest Service in
Lake Tahoe

has recommended a very early clean up of dried and dead debris due to a good chance of a early fire season this year. Remove all dry material and take it to the dump. Keeping weeds, leaves and pine needles under control is a great way to help your cabin in the event of a forest fire. Also this is a great time to check all your fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and of course a great time to make sure all those squirrels have not dug holes to sleep the winter away under your cabin. I also use this time to tune up or sharpen the chain saw and work on the lawn mower if you have grass. Also it is a great time to make sure you are bear proofed for the summer (view more information about bears in
Lake Tahoe

over at the League To Save Bears).

Be sure (like at home) you check all windows, gutters (clean them as well), weather stripping, doors, locks, and of course clean your barbeque! And you are now ready to enjoy a beautiful summer ahead.

Decorate In Rustic Decor

Every person has terms they use to talk about home décor. Country, Colonial, Early Americana, contemporary, etc., each term is dedicated to its own style. The one term that is lost in the shuffle of decorating is “rustic décor”. When people think rustic décor! They think of the log cabin, an old farm house, items that looked aged. All those things are very rustic and they are sure to make one feel that they are in a rustic living quarters, however many other styles of rustic décor are an option. Using rustic items around the home or you cabin adds a great deal of warmth to ones heart. Rustic items can be used with many other décor designs such as country, contemporary, classic and in some cases the art deco look. You can rest assured that your rustic piece will add some warmth, charm and uniqueness to your decorating style. Some of these tips might help you out when you are decorating with the rustic theme. Rustic items are textural; you should add it in small amounts. A full room of rustic décor is a bit much to take in. By adding it in small amounts you allow each piece to stand out and shine. You can add a switch plate cover to blend in with a rustic lamp or you may want to group some rustic items around a fireplace. We have found placing some pine cones in an old pale works great for the rustic look by the fireplace. Consider using rustic accent pieces around the house, such as a coffee table or an end table, mirrors, coat hooks, or other accessories in such rooms as a guest room or the bathroom. By using small accessories like this you are not committing yourself to an entire houseful of rustic items. Try adding some rustic décor to your dinning table. In the form of candle holders, baskets or place a few pinecones in a basket for the center piece. If you can picture a nice dinner with a fire in the back round! You are on your way to a perfect back drop for rustic décor that you and your guests will love. Let’s not forget about out doors as well. On your patio in the back or your front porch, both of these places also can be decorated in the rustic theme. For the seating you can use a log bench or an iron bench, these both look great if you have a vine plant around them. After all this type of bench will look better then the plastic ones we all see. Decorating isn’t just about overhauling a home; it can also be about refreshing the small areas of your home. Chances are by adding some rustic décor to those areas will add charm and warmth to any style you choose. People are drawn to certain styles, and there is something to be said about rustic décor. You should always have fun with your rustic items. Incorporate your rustic touches to put and individual signature on your home.

Make Your Own Rustic Decor Using Old Fihsihg Gear

Thumb220058 Decorating with old, used fishing gear is fun, creative and pretty inexpensive as well. It’s real easy to find unique fishing gear to use as decorating items. Here are a few ideas for your fishing decor projects.

First you will need to find some old fishing gear. Garage sales are great for purchasing used fishing equipment for your projects. Keep an eye out for used nets, poles, lures, bobbers, stringers and other Items. You can even walk the shores of your favorite lake as you will be surprised what fishermen leave behind. You will also get a great workout and a nice hike while hunting old gear on the shores, pack a lunch and make a day out of it.

Once you find the gear you would like to use be sure to clean everything very carefully and thoroughly. In the past I have used such items to clean my finds, alcohol for lures (be sure to snip the hook point off), bleach for nets (hand soak them). Of course you can us the age old 3 and 1 vinegar solution to remove any fish smell that may still be attached to your item; After all you do not want that smell in your home.

The types of decorating you can do with your items are endless. This is where the fun and imagination kicks in. These are just a few ideas to help get you started on your rustic fishing décor items. Old bait buckets make great containers. You can use them in bathrooms by rolling up some hand towels for the inside, dried flowers, or by placing bath products in them. These buckets also work great in such places as the kitchen for napkins, flower arrangements or in bed rooms for all those loose things lying around the dresser. Do not forget they are perfect for the spare change as well.

Old fishing poles from garage sales are pretty cheap and make great curtain rods or wall decor. If using them as curtain rods, be sure to remove the thread loops that the fishing line enters; Place your rings on the rod and then your drapes. This will really make for a great conversation piece. Wall décor is always fun with old rods. By placing two in an X shape on any wall with an old fishing net, fishing hat or a shelf or maybe by an old fishing shadow box, this will bring the great outdoors into your home or cabin.

Shadow boxes are a perfect asset to any rustic décor. I have used old wood that I had lying around in the garage. Construct your box and place an old fishing photo, some old lures, an old bait jar, rusted fishing waits, etc. Hang it on the wall to show your creative side.

Other things I have tried with old fishing items are. I have placed old nets wrapped in drift wood to place them on walls, I have taken old fishing bobbers and used them as chain pulls for lights, I was lucky on that one as I found a great bobber that was brown and tan to blend. If you do not like the colors of the bobbers then you have created another craft by painting them. I have seen several people in my area of Lake Tahoe even use bobbers as drawer knobs in the kitchen.

Creating your own decor is fun, inexpensive and for the most part you will end up with unique decorating items for your cabin. The best part of it all! You are able to build the item as you see fit, After it has hung on the wall for some time, you are able to change it around if you would like or it will inspire you to head back out and retrieve more fishing gear for your next project.

Tahoe Pine Works Would Like To Thank All The People Working The Angora Fire

Hello and Welcome.

At this time we would like to thank everyone for sending us notes, emails, phone calls, etc. during the Angora fire that was burning in South Lake Tahoe. We are happy to say that all Tahoe Pine Works people made it out of this fire safe and lost nothing. We spent many days protecting homes and the areas around us to prevent fire in our area. We would also like to thank the customers who at the time placed orders with us and were understanding when the orders were a day or two late due to the fire.

A very large THANK YOU goes out to the many firefighters, CDF, US Forest Service, Flight Crews and the fire departments that traveled several hours to help fight this fire. With out all of you we are sure Lake Tahoe would have been gone. THANK YOU

On June 23rd our fire started out in the Angora Lake area. By June 28th the Angora fire had burned more then  200 homes and forced some 2,000 residents to evacuate. Fire crews had hopes of containment by July 3rd. On July 2nd these same fire crews had this fire under containment. All in all the Angora fire burned more then 3,100 acres and had destroyed 254 homes 75 businesses and damaged 14 other homes. The fire reached a cost of $12.5 million to fight with more funding needed to continue on the restoration of the area. Cal fire officials believe the fire started due to an illegal camp fire!

Again we would like to thank you our customers for checking in on us and we would like to again thank the fire crews for putting this fire out.

A note to  our customers whom own second homes in this area. Please be advised that the local sheriffs has been working on the prevention of non licensed contractors trying to get work in the burned areas (they have already arrested 5 of these people) Please be sure to check licenses if one of these people contact you about work. We will be more then happy to help you out in doing this. If you need any photos and can not make it up to Lake Tahoe please feel free to contact us as we will take photos for you and help you out any way that we can.
